How to use Ethereum gas intelligently

Every Ethereum transaction costs gas — a small amount of ETH paid to validators to include your transaction in a block. Gas prices are quoted in Gwei (1 Gwei = 0.000000001 ETH) and fluctuate with network demand. UK users are typically watching gas in GBP terms. Our tracker does that conversion live, so you know before you sign whether a transaction will cost you £0.30 or £30. The Gwei price is multiplied by 21,000 (a standard transfer) and by the current ETH/GBP rate. A few rules of thumb: base fee plus a small tip (1–2 Gwei priority fee) is usually enough unless you need instant confirmation. Weekends and overnight UK time tend to be cheapest. NFT mints and CEX-listed token launches cause spikes.

Frequently asked questions

Why are gas prices in Gwei?

Gwei is a subdivision of ETH (1 Gwei = 10⁻⁹ ETH). It's used because typical gas prices are tiny fractions of an ETH, and expressing them as small whole numbers is easier than scientific notation.

What's the base fee vs the priority fee?

Since EIP-1559, Ethereum has a base fee that's burned (removed from supply) and a priority fee that goes to validators. Your total gas price is base + priority. Wallets usually handle this automatically, but understanding it helps you negotiate transaction urgency.

When is gas cheapest?

Typically early weekend mornings UK time — lowest US and Asian activity overlap. Avoid NFT mint days, major news, and the hours after big CEX token launches.

How much gas do complex transactions cost?

A simple ETH transfer is 21,000 gas. An ERC-20 transfer is ~60,000. A Uniswap swap is 150,000–300,000. A complex DeFi interaction can be 500,000+. Multiply the gas amount by the Gwei price, then by the current ETH/GBP rate for your cost.

Does this data work for Layer 2s?

This tracker is for Ethereum mainnet only. L2s like Arbitrum, Optimism and Base have their own (much cheaper) gas markets. We plan to add L2 gas tracking soon.
